Wilfred Sperryn is a man who is determined to make an impact on all his staff members and the industry.

As a trustee and owner of Juluka Asset Trust t/a Septic Tank Services, Wilfred Sperryn has been in the plumbing industry for 15 years. He is the driving force behind the business as he motivates his staff to deliver their best.

“I lead the staff and make sure the business functions effectively and efficiently. I want to make sure that customers are satisfied,” says Sperryn. But how?

He does this through applying his knowledge from his personal plumbing experience. He also monitor’s his staff’s performance to ensure quality workmanship, and incorporates new ideas and changes, in order to keep up to date.

Sewerage pains (mini subhead)
What is worrying for Sperryn, is the standards of the sewage industry in South Africa, especially treatment plants, which unfortunately are declining at an alarming rate.

“The plumber’s knowledge of sewage/septic tanks is poor and drain installations generally are of a very low standard,” expressed Sperryn. Other worries, according to Sperryn, are the non-SABS or inferior materials being used, which are non-compliant with regulation, illegal connections, and unregistered plumbers. “This all results in the plumbing industry being viewed in a poor light by consumers,” he adds. “For those who are unregistered, I believe their main intention is to make a quick buck. This is not fair to the public.”

According to Sperryn: “IOPSA membership is a good idea, but this needs to be more rigidly enforced and brought to consumers' attention. “In our experience the current skills level and standard of plumbers is poor.”

He believes that there needs to be better enforcement of standards and that all plumbers be registered. “Training and skill levels needs be raised to acceptable standards,” concluded Sperryn. ◊
