The May attendance of the IOPSA members at the WaterSmith house in Pretoria discussed solar geysers presented by Jonathan Waters, executive member from IOPSA Gauteng, and Lea Smith (PIRB chairman) talking about the PIRB (Plumbing Industry Registration Board).
Members were first informed about upcoming courses, followed by a lengthy explanation by Waters from WaterSmith Training Centre, on the importance of registering plumbers.
The second talk focused on the importance of saving the qualified plumber, the links between IOPSA and PIRB, and the consequences of having ‘unqualified plumbers’ imposing on the qualified practicing plumbers.
This was also extended to the upcoming events where plumbers will be registered with an identity card, much like the drivers license, and the fact that the official PIRB database will be pulling 5% of the registered plumbers’ logged work for an audit by the professional body.
The third talk, by Ken Marriot, enlightened the plumbers on the usefulness of a wireless debit and credit card machine, by Concorde Solution. This device, working on the principles of cell phone technology, can be hired from his firm with full insurance to allow the plumber to no longer accept delays in payment when clients say “I don’t have any money on me right now, could I drop it off later?”
Finally the Gauteng chapter of IOPSA, learnt about the Cobra concealed cistern presented by Patrick Gordon. The device was shown to be simple to maintain due to its easy to clip on and off panelling. Added to this, it was also explained how easily this mechanism could ‘melt’ into the wall tiling.
A Genergy Solar geyser was given away in a lucky draw upon closing along with a host of Rothenberger tools.
As a whole, the meeting was well received by the members and this shows that this year’s theme for Gauteng is “MEMBER PARTICIPATION”. We look forward to seeing more of this kind of meeting through the year. ◊
