While I was cleaning up my desk in preparation of the festive season, I came across a write-up about the trouble the US Customs had to go through to implement some control on the import of illegal refrigerants into the USA.
We are not immune to the illegal imports, and it seems that our borders are not well controlled and illegal refrigerants may well find its way into the country’s refrigeration system with disastrous results in respect of the equipment’s life and performance.

System failures are not only costly from the equipment point of view, but what about the loss of product.  ACRICSA’s registration of Safe Handling of Refrigerants is acknowledged as a qualification as the Training & Assessment is carried out based on SAQA’s registered standards 116334,116700 and 116704  by MerSETA registered assessors.
This qualification and subsequent registration thereof, applies to individuals and not the companies.  ACRICSA has therefore, decided to start registering companies who have undertaken, by virtue of a Director’s Resolution to only employ persons who carry out work on refrigeration systems that have a current registrations is the Safe Handling of Refrigerants.  It means that companies can include a certificate issued by ACRICSA when submitting a tender where proof is required of compliance with the relevant regulations.  This requirement of companies to submit a Compliance Certificate is becoming more popular by clients who have realised that the refrigerants are use today are becoming more hazardous and should only be handled by competent persons.
For a company to register, it only needs to:
1.    Submit an extract of the Directors Board Meeting of the resolution where the decision was made that only persons would be employed who are allowed to work with refrigerants and are registered with ACRICSA and carry a current registration card in the Safe Handling of Refrigerant.
2.    Appoint a senior employee, preferably a Director, who will be responsible for implementing the terms of the resolution.
3.    Submit full details of the company, i.e., name, Registration No., names of Directors and company contact details.
4.    Deposit a registration fee of R 2 736.00, incl. VAT. into ACRICSA’s bank account, (details on request).  Registration is valid for 1 year, after which re-registering etc. is required.
5.    The company will get:
•    A framed certificate that can be displayed at the company’s premises.
•    A certificate in the form of a pdf file to allow the certificate to be duplicated and included with tender documents or other documentation.
•    Included in the schedule of Registered Companies appearance on ACRICSA’s website (www.acricsa.co.za) and a listing in the RACA magazine when it appears in 2010.

To get the ball rolling, ACRICSA offers the 2nd year free for the first 10 companies to register.   â—Š
